A field experiment in camera phone usage and interpersonal relationship

Abstract
In these days, computer-mediated communication has increased its diversity and various services which enables us to share still or motion pictures online (e.g. moblog and YouTube) have got a large number of users. The rapid development of mobile technology makes such communication easier than before and the number of Internet users via mobile phone becomes more common than those via PC. It is quite a contrast to unpopularity of fixed videophone which is similar in terms of multimedia communication. This study intended to investigate the qualitative description of communication accompanied with some still or motion pictures by mobile camera phone. A diary survey of 20 mobile phone users which recorded all of their camera phone uses for a week was conducted to explore the difference of transmitted images in communication partners and situations.
