5時前に起床．今日も天気は曇りがちだ．まず昨日の日記を書く．ランチ用のご飯を炊いた後，6時半頃からホテルの周辺をお散歩してみた．やはり蚊が多い．でもそういえば昨日は一晩中小窓を開けていたのに部屋の中にはまったく入ってこなかった．このことからもこの蚊が人の血を求めていないことが分かる．部屋のすぐ前あたりに，まさにマグマが吹き出していたような，地面が盛り上がった裂け目があったので，その上に登ってみたりする．マクロレンズで小さな花を撮る練習をしたりするが，やっぱり蚊がたかってくるのであまり長い時間じっとはしていられなかった．
部屋に戻ってランチ用おにぎり（今日はかつお＋のり）を製作した後，朝食へ．今日は広い食堂にわさわさと人がいたので緊張する必要はなかった．昨日のメニューにゆで卵，フルーツが加わったちょっと豪華版．周囲はやや年配めの夫婦連れやグループばかりで，みなガタイが一様に大きいので，北欧系の人ではないかと思った．アジア人はまったくおらず，若めの人間もいない．後者については，多分ここが四つ星ホテルだからではないか（アイスランド国内のホテルランキングは四つ星が最高らしい），とはご夫君の推測だった．
9時前には，周囲の部屋はみな出払って掃除中．おそらくツアー客なのだろう．われわれもチェックアウトを済ませて出発だ．今日はミヴァートン湖からやや北東にある国立公園地帯をまわる予定である．火山地帯の真ん中にぽっかりできた平原を走り抜けていくと，道端の所々にケルンが積んである．旅人の手によるものだろうが，等間隔にいくつかずらりと並んでいたりもするのが面白い．歩いたり自転車だったりする旅人（前者はさすがに今はほとんど見ない）がこういう造作をしたくなるのは世界共通のことのなのだろう．
Dettifossはこちら，という標識のところで左折し，火山地帯に入り込んでいく．今日のメインとなる目的地であり，欧州最大の大瀑布があるところだ．ここからは「4WD以外通行禁止」という看板が立っていて，アスファルト舗装されていた道もダートになる．Dettifossは，東西両サイドからアプローチすることができるのだが，今から行くのはそのうち西側で，一般的な車では入り込めないから，たいていの個人客やツアーはこちらには来られない，という方である．羊の家族がそこここに点在するダートの道を，ぐいぐいと進んでいく．急勾配や急カーブが続くにもかかわらず道幅がぐっと狭いところもあり，地面はでこぼこだから，確かに一般車ではとても登れたものではないだろう．しかし4WDでちょっと車高は高いものの，普通の観光バス型のバスも登っていっていたのは驚きだった．滝に近づくにつれ，周囲の風景はまた月面世界さながらに荒涼としたものになっていく．ところどころ雨のぱらつくところはあったが，天気はおおむね良好のうちに，駐車場に到着した．既に数台の先客があった．
駐車場からは徒歩10分ほど歩いて，Dettifossに到着．もう大瀑布も３つ目だが，ここの規模はでかい．幅も広いが落差が大きい．さすがに世界最大の氷河から流れてくる世界最大の滝である．ロンプラによれば「東西両サイド，どちらからの眺めがよりよいかという点は意見が分かれるところだが，西に行った人はたいがいそちらに軍配を上げる場合が多い」とのこと．多分に認知的不協和が絡んでいるような気もするが，滝の全景が分かるからだという．対岸を見ると確かにそういった点では西側の方がよさそうだ．
少しでも滝に近づこうとロープを乗り越えて際のところに近づく人たちを後目に（ああいうルール違反をやるのも洋の東西を問わないらしい）少し高台に登って，滝から落ちた水が霧となってもうもうとしているような地帯に近づいてみた．足元は水が浮き，ぬかるんでいる．霧の中に入ってみると…それは霧ではなく，大雨だった（笑 考えてみれば滝の至近なのだから当然といえば当然か．二人して一気にずぶぬれ．まあ，世界最大の滝に打たれて修行するのも，貴重な経験だったということにしよう．
少し上流にあるSellfoss（こちらも幅はかなり広い）は遠く眺めるだけにして，さらに北へ向かう．これが実は今までで最大の難所であった．先ほどまでよりもさらにでこぼこした道に，霧と雨のコンボである．元々雨が降っていたらしく，路面がぬかるんでいて，ところどころに道幅いっぱいの大きな水たまりがある．水たまりというよりも，泥たまりだ．愛車（笑）をなるべく汚したくないご夫君は，最初は泥たまりに来るとなるべく速度を落としてゆるゆると越えていたが，そうしているといちいち加速をしなければならず，ペースが落ちることこの上ない．そのうちあきらめがついて，ある程度避けることを意識しながらも盛大に泥しぶきをあげて越えていくようになったが，そうすると今度は自分で跳ね上げた泥をフロントガラスに浴びることもあり，一瞬視界が遮られる．泥たまりを越える時は先にワイパーの速度を上げて突っ込むことになり，それはそれで大変だ．泥たまりだけを必死に回避しようとすれば，大きな石ころが道の真ん中に転がっていたりもする．つまりどうやっても認知＆運動処理を節約することはできない，大変な道のりなのであった．ｉPodとスピーカーも当然ダッシュボードに載せてはおられず，グローブボックスに収納しなければならなかった．
そんな道を50キロほども行き，１時間ちょっとで難関を突破．霧が晴れて平野が見えてくると，気分的にもほっとする．しかしあれで時速は50キロ程度で走れるのだから4WDはすごい．ちなみに行き交う4WDはほとんどがレンタカーだとは思うが，そのほとんどが日本車である．私たちと同じRAV4をはじめとして，もう少し大きいものならランクル，あるいは日産テラノやスズキジムニーなどが主だ．日本にはあんなオフロードほとんどないのに，すごいな，日本．ちなみに普通の乗用車も日本車が一番多く，多分レンタカーで一番安いランクだと思われるヴィッツ（こちらではYARISという名前らしい）がたくさん走っている．
次に車を停めたのはAsbyrgiという観光スポット．ここは元々は氷河から流れ落ちる巨大な滝があったところだそうだが，その後水が枯れ，断崖絶壁だけが残ったところらしい．断崖絶壁に囲まれた地帯は風から守られ，アイスランドではほぼ唯一だとされる森ができたということだ．確かに，普段見慣れている森と比べると非常に頼りない規模とサイズだが，細く背丈の低めな白樺などが生い茂っている．その間にトレイルが整備されていて，断崖絶壁の間近まで近づくことができた．大きな叫び声をあげたり口笛を吹いたりすると，絶壁に反響してこだまがよく聞こえる．先ほどのDettifossも，水がなければこういう雰囲気のところになるのだろう．
断崖絶壁の中腹や頂上にも登ることができたのだが，とりあえずやめておいて，森の中程にあるベンチでランチにした．目を上げると断崖絶壁，周囲は森，そんな中でおにぎりをぱくついて麦茶を飲むのは，いかにも日本的ハイキングの姿ではありませんか．マクロレンズで小さな植物を撮る練習をしながら駐車場にぶらぶらと戻る．なかなかピントを合わせるコツが分からず難しい．
Asbyrgiで折り返す形で南下し，今度はDettifossの東側に向かった．こちらの道は，確かにダートではあるのだが，西側よりも遙かにアプローチしやすく，一般車でも通行可となっている．先ほどの道に慣れていると，子供だまし程度のものだ．といっても調子に乗ると事故の元なので，スピードは出しつつも慎重に走る．
さほど時間もかからずまたDettifoss付近まで到着したが，Dettifossの手前にHafragilsfossという滝があったので，そちらにも立ち寄ってみた．ここは噴火で溶岩が飛び散ったそのままの赤い大地が印象的だ．遠目からしか眺められなかったが，火山の噴火後にできた深い峡谷の中にある滝というのも，また印象深い眺めだった．
Hafragilsfossから2.7キロでDettifoss @ Eastern Bank到着．駐車場も広く，来ている車も半分以上が一般車で，当然観光客も多い．
5分ほど道を下ると滝のそばに出た．こちらはほぼ真横から滝を眺めるような角度になる．全容を眺めることはできないが，しかしものすごーく接近できる．滝の中にざぶざぶ入って行こうと思えば私たちをとどめるものは何もない．こんなに危険なところなのにロープも何も張られていないのだ．滝壺も，滝壺に流れ落ちる直前の濁流も，最接近して眺められるという点では，こちらのサイドも非常に面白いところだと思った．滝壺に近いあたりなど，土曜ワイド劇場なら犯人が告白を始めそうなところだし，濁流のそばなど，恨みに思う人をだまくらかして連れてきて殺人をしようと思えばちょっと突っついてバランスを崩させてやるだけで容易だろう．一歩足を踏み出せばそこには確実に死が待っている．ただの観光地なのにそんな何とも名状しがたい気持ち悪さが心を支配するようなところだった．
今日の観光はほぼ終了．一路今日の宿泊地であるアイスランド東部のフィヨルド地帯SEYDISFJORDUR（正確な綴りではない）に向かった．200キロほどと結構距離はあるのだが，特に立ち寄れそうなところもないのでひたすら走る．ひたすら走る分には時速は120キロ程度までは軽く出るし，信号などまったくないので，あまり時間はかからない．200キロも走ると，天気も風景もくるくると変わる．晴れたかと思えば雨が降り，先般噴火したそのまんま，といったようなどちらかといえばのっぺりした火山地帯を縫って走り抜けていくことがあるかと思えば，ごつごつした岩の間から滝が流れ落ちている地帯もあれば，のんびりと羊の家族が草をはんでいる農業地帯もある．風景の変化は楽しいが，既にどこでどういう風景だったのかはよく覚えていない（笑
手前の街Egilsstadir（正確な綴りでは…）で給油した後，一山越えて30キロ弱でSEYDISFJORDUR，だったのだがこの道もすごかった．多分晴れていれば何のことはない峠道なのだが，猛烈な霧．Dense fogここに極まれり，だ．道路脇のポールも，すぐ前のものも見えないほどの状況が10分ほど続いた．少し高低差があるだけでこれだけ違うとは，本当にダイナミックな気候である．
霧が晴れ，SEYDISFJORDURに到着．フィヨルドに囲まれた港町だが，さっきの霧があってフィヨルドの全景を眺めることはできない．街に入ってすぐのところに宿泊するHotel Aldanがあった．ただしそれは本館で，こちらにはレセプションと共同バスの部屋があるだけで，私たちが泊まるバス付きの部屋があるのは少し離れた新しい建物だった．レセプションで簡単なチェックインの手続きを済ませ，鍵をもらって自分たちで行くというシステムだ．新しい建物といってもつくりは本館とほぼ同じようなもので，元々は銀行だった1887建築の建物をリノベーションして使っているものらしい．リノベーションしたのはごくごく最近のことのようで，内部は新しい建物の匂いがする．床はフローリング，アンティークの家具が配された屋根裏風の部屋だった．ここもそうだが，アイスランドのベッドメイキングは独特だ．デュベスタイルではあるが，中の掛け布団を縦にたたんで，真ん中にこんもり盛り上げるようにしてある．そしてどこもベッドそのものが細長い．背が高く痩せた人が多いからだろうか？ でも長さがそれほど長いということでもないようだ．面白い．部屋にはインターネットのコンセントはあるが，つないでも何も起こらなかった．
例の試合も気になるので，ロンプラ情報でインターネットが使えるというカフェに出かける．街の規模が小さいのですぐそこだ．ちょっとしたカフェの奥まったところにPCが置いてあって，30分150Ikr，お一人様1時間まで限定でインターネットが使えるようになっていた．この料金はなかなかに格安だろう．ちなみにブラウザはFireFoxだった．真っ先にヤフースポーツをチェック．なんとか勝ってくれたらしい．初戦をひどい負け方で落とした割に，結果的には２勝１敗で済んだのだからよしとしよう．ほっと安心して，ホテルに戻る．道すがら眺めていると，本当に小さな港町だ．元々は水産加工場があって栄えていたようだが，それが2003年に閉鎖されてからは，主に観光業で儲けているらしい．欧州からのSmyrilラインが停泊するから，定期的に観光客は見込めるそうだ．
帰ってからは夕食製作に励む．今日のメニューはスパゲッティチキンクリームソース（もちろんレトルト），ひじきの煮物（戻して添付のつゆで煮るだけ），ミニトマトとゆでさやえんどう（どちらもレイキャビクで買ったもの），みそ汁（レトルト）である．どうも電熱調理器の片方の調子が悪くなってきたらしく，スパゲティのゆでが甘かった．なんとかソースを絡めてごまかす．他はおいしくいただいた．
「旅サラダ」のアイスランド編のDVDを見て，これまでに訪問したところの復習と，明日の氷河情報を確認してから，またしても21時頃に就寝．
